Weave Away This week the students in Mrs. Reichert’s art class have started a new project. They have finished their self-portraits. If you would like to take a look at their work, they are placed in the front of the school by Mrs. McGuyer and Ms. Edwards classrooms. The recent projects that the 7th and 8th grades have been working on are weaving. They are doing what you call a sample weaving. It contains different styles of weaving along with at least six different colors. From Monday-Wednesday the students have learned tabby, leno, and sumaric weaving. When did weaving get started? Better yet, who began weaving as a hobby? Well Weaving was first started by Indians. Weaving is over 2,700 years old. Recently archaeologists have discovered a weaving that was done 2,700 years ago. But how can you weave and you don’t know what different types there are. Well the basic weaving is called tabby weaving. If you want to get advanced then you may want to try leno weaving or sumaric. There are LOTS other weaving out there for you to try. Some suggestions are Hugo, five-heddle weave, plain Dutch weave, Twill weave, and Reverse Dutch weave.
Art in the Summer?
During summer break do you ever get bored? Does going to the local pool get old? Well to occupy you being bored, maybe you should try art. At the beginning of the summer come up with an art project that takes dedication. Here are a couple of ideas of some projects you might want to try. You could make a nature T-shirt. Use a solid colored t-shirt in a bright color (pink, yellow, blue or green). Gather up nature objects such as leaves, ferns, flowers, rubber gloves, or a spray bottle with bleach and a tub of cold water. Place shirt outside on a hard flat surface (like cement), away from anything that might be damaged by bleach. Arrange objects in a design on the shirt. Only the objects' silhouettes will show, so items with distinctive shapes work well. The adult wears rubber gloves to spray bleach lightly around the objects' or design's edges. When the color starts to change (about 1 minute), remove and dispose of the nature items. Dunk the shirt in the bucket and thoroughly rinse. Put shirt through washer and dryer before its creator wears it. Other options are sand art, watercolor mural, painted rocks, sea shell art, melted crayons, jigsaw puzzle, Jewelry and barrettes, play dough and tin foil characters. These are some very fun options for you to choose from. The Quote of the Day for 4-4-08 is.........

The museum features over 1200 exhibits, as of 2006. It was first opened on Feb. 23 2006 by the Duke of Edinburgh (which is a dukedom associated with Edinburgh Scotland). In its mission statement the museum declares itself "Dedicated to preserving the best of British cartoons, caricatures, comics and animation, and to establishing a museum with a gallery, archives and innovative exhibitions to make the creativity of cartoon art past and present, accessible to all for the purposes of education, research and enjoyment."

The Europe Zurich
Europe had their biggest art theft on Tuesday. Swiss police found two of four oil paintings outside of 19th century masters. The paintings were stolen from a Zurich museum. Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland. Two paintings By Vincent Van Gogh and Monetwere found on Monday in a car that was outside a Zurich hospital . The police have an estimate with the value of $70 million Swiss francs ($64 million in the U.S.). The Police did not find the identity of the robbers while investigations continued and they were not aware of the ransom that has been paid. Van Gogh and Monet’s paintings were found in good condition displayed at a news conference in Zurich on Tuesday in their original frames. Three men in dark clothing and masks forced their way into the museum last week and made off with the paintings in a white car. Our latest update for HTMS is that the kids have done it again. They are now working hard on another project. The project for the next week or so is that they will be working on a building clay. Last week they spent their time watching clay movies on how to make different types of clay. So they know all that they need to know. They won’t be makingpots though, they are going to pull of making a fish. I am really excited to see what will be the final product, but I can already tell that these are going to be nice!!! Here are a couple of interesting facts about him: ·His paintings were realistic and had dark color. ·He painted life like paintings of people, fresco painting, and statues. ·His first love was sculpture. ·He learned "fresco painting" in wet plaster from Master Ghirlandaio. His most famous painting was the Chapel. He painted many scenes from the bible. It took him four years to complete his painting. His famous sculpture was David. This statue is made out of marble and it is 16 feet 10 inches tall. Here is a personal thought from someone named Daniel about Michaelangelo Buonarroti: "Michaelangelo was a good artist because he was the best sculptor in the whole world. I liked his sculptures with David about to use the sling shot against the giant Goliath." In London, England it’s their 8th year of Asian art as it unites with London’s leading Art Dealers, Auction Houses and major institutions, in a unique event of Seminars, Auctions and Selling Exhibitions. In New York, their museum presents: Mythic City (Photographs of New York by Samuel H. Gottscho, 1925-1940). In Liverpool, England they are celebrating after two of its UK premiere exhibitions photography prize. While in Montreal, Canada they welcome a filmmaker and archeologist named Jeremy Keenan. He will present his documentary Les Dieux inférieurs du Sahara. In London, England they present art from space with stunning art installations created by artists who will illuminate the City of London’s Queen Street area. There are many things that famous artist have done. One thing that they have done is give us quotes that have become famous. Pablo Picasso has lots of famous quotes. One of them is: “IF only we could put out our brains and use only our eyes.” Leonardo Da Vinci says : “Where the spirit does not work with the hand there is no art.” Another thing Vincent Van Gogh says is : “ What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything?” To see more art quotes

ART TODAY…………OR ARTS PAST????
Our recent update on the HTMS art class has been given. The 7thand8th gradestudents have been working on a mountain project. They have been studying how to make things look like they are close or far away. These mountains are fantastic looking and the students have been working very hard on them. The past Thursday drawing has been for7th gradeto draw one of a famous artist’s art works. It was to look somewhat like the artist’s drawing. The 8th grade’s pastThursday drawing was to draw a large animal. Examples would be a horse, whale, etc. They were to shade and highlight correctly and draw a proper background. The past seventh gradehas still been working on getting their picture’s in for their self-portrait. The sooner they get those in the sooner they will get to begin. As for the8th gradethey still have plenty of time for them to get their chairs in. They will begin this project on March 26th. We cannot wait to see what these students have in store for us in these projects.
POP ART
Study of the history of art is a relatively recent phenomenon; prior to the Renaissance, the modern concept of "art" did not exist, and art was used to refer to workmanship by generally anonymous trades people. There are different types of art. Such as: Architecture, Cinematography, Painting, Sculpture, and Photography. A couple of art concepts would be abstract art, art dealer, art gallery, figurative art, fine art, and modern art. Some famous artists would be Norman Rockwell, Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Leonardo Da Vinci. Some easy art work that you could practice is would be pop art which is an every day item that is drawn in a colorful way. It’s inspired by comic strips, advertising, and popular entertainment. Pop Art is short for popular art. So if you like to draw cartoons, then pop art is the type of art for you!!! If you would like to know more email me at Xotiara@gaggle.net. I would be happy to give you more informationJ
Want to be updated on what current things are happening in art? My name is Tiara and I will be giving you the latest updates of what HTMS student have in store for us in their art class. The students of HTMS Mrs. Reddick-Reichert’s art class have been working hard this year. They have been doing different types of art work such as abstract, realistic, hatching, crosshatching, and now even portraits. They use different materials to shade and highlight such as pastels, paint, and watercolors. In her class they have a file which they contain their journals drawings. Whenever there is free time on their hands, they are working on one of their journal drawings. At the end of the year they are going to gather all of their drawings and make a book. Even when they are not in school they are working hard on their Thursday drawings. A Thursday drawing is a homework assignment that art students have and it is due every Thursday. For example one of the Thursday drawings for 7th grade was to draw a picture of any living thing; examples are plant, animal etc. The 8th grade’s assignment was to draw 3 sport wise things. Examples are, baseball, baseball helmet, bat. All Thursday drawings have to contain a proper background, all details that you see, it has to be properly shaded and highlighted, and it must fill up the page and be done in #2 pencil.
CROSSHATCHING
Our students also have recent projects that they will be working on. 7th grade will be drawing a self- portrait of themselves. If they do not have one of themselves, they may bring one of their relative. They have to bring in an 8 by 10 mug shot of themselves (head to shoulders only). It is not to be dark and has to be professionally made. They will be drawing their picture on grid enlargement to begin with. Then they will transfer it to a regular white sheet of paper. They will begin this process on January 28, which is Monday. The 8th grade will be having a project also. They will be working on what Mrs. Reichert calls “The Wacky Chair Project”! The material needed to make this project is a wooden chair sanded and primed with white primer. They may use rocking chairs, vanity chairs old dining room chairs, odd occasional chairs and even wooden outdoor furniture chairs. They will begin the process on March 26, the Monday we come back from spring break. I am pretty sure we are more than excited to see what our art students will produce for us. They have been working hard all week and their hard work will show of on their drawings.
